Dropshipping in a nutshell
Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where a business sells products and goods right from third party providers. Such businesses do not keep products they sell in stock. Instead, when an order is placed, the products are purchased by the store owner from a third party and gets them shipped directly to the customer. One noticeable difference with this business model compared to the standard retail model is that the selling merchant doesn’t stock or own inventory. Inventory is purchased as needed from a third party – usually a wholesaler or manufacturer – to fulfill orders. While this model might sounds like the perfect business model, it has its drawbacks which anyone going down this route must consider. One of the major problems with selling your products from a third party is inventory and stock level management. This problem gets even worse when dealing with multiple stores / products / third party providers.
Dropshipping businesses usually receive stock level and price updates from their suppliers in CSV format. These CSV files need to be formatted with templates your sales platform such as Shopify can understand. This is a very tedious task which requires a considerable effort and attention to get it right.
How does it work
Stock&Buy manages dropshipping operations in profiles. A dropshipping profile has a name, it has various fields which help the Stock&Buy platform understand the supplier CSV file so you don’t have to manually do the mapping. These profiles are managed in the Dropshipping center within Stock&Buy which accessible from the action buttons on the right hand side of the main inventory view.
Once you click on the Dropshipping button, you will be taken your dropshipping center shown below
Click on the ‘Create a new profile’ button to get the edit profile dialog
This dialog allows you to provide extra information about your CSV file which Stock&Buy will use to properly parse the supplier CSV files uploaded into this profile. These parameters are:
- Profile name: A display name for your profile. It is recommended to use a name which speaks for itself to easily identify this profile among others
- CSV delimiter: The delimiter character used in the CSV file. We currently support comma (,) and semicolon ( ; ) delimited CSV files
- Product / variant identification: This section is the most import one as it defines the columns to look at when matching the supplier products with those on Stock&Buy and your online stores if you have any
- Product fields to update: Stock&Buy currently supports updating the ‘Quantity’ and ‘Price’ of your products. Use this section to specify the column name where stock levels and prices are located.
Once the changes are saved, the profile will be shown in the Dropshipping center of your Stock&Buy account.
Each profile has an ‘Upload CSV’ link through which supplier CSV files will be uploaded to our servers and processed on your behalf.
